Why didn’t anyone tell this? – The impact of the abortion experienced on the woman and on the family

Abstract

For 12 years the author and her team have been dealing with therapy for post-abortive women and study the psychological symptoms after abortion, as well as effects on the family. She draws attention to the political distortions of research on such topics and to the importance of disseminating credible research results widely.

The blocked mourning process following abortion (forbidden grief), the emotional inhibition (“freezing”) as a result of unprocessed trauma, in most cases also destroys the relationship, and thus the whole family. It also affects children born before or after, and ultimately the society as a whole and consequently the birth rate as well.

The author makes two important statements:
1. It is a myth that abortion is based on an informed and free decision. In addition to ignorance, pressure or coercion by the family, especially the partner, plays a major role. It would be vital to provide full prior information, including psychological aspects, and also to screen decisions made under pressure, as these women are particularly vulnerable because of consequences.

2. The child’s right to life should not be compared to the woman’s well-being. Abortion has got serious consequences for the mother; a support system is required that stands by both of them.
